 GENERAL - Answers
1: What is Young Investor Pack (YIP)?
 

YIP is an initiative by OCBC Securities in partnership with i-Cube. It is a bundle of OCBC Securities products and services specifically designed with the novice investor in mind. This includes an online trading account, the Young Investor Pocketbook, compiled by NTU Investment Interactive Club for new investors and also a book on investment for more in-depth information. YIP members will also be invited to exclusive seminars and events.

With effect from 19 May 2009, an investor from 18 years old onwards may open a trading account with OCBC Securities, subject to certain conditions

2: What is OCBC Securities’ objective in developing this program?
 

OCBC Securities believes in contributing to a financially literate Singapore. Our initiatives with tertiary institutions date back to 2006 when we worked with I-Cube to organise activities to share financial knowledge. Young Investor Pack is a breakthrough in our continuing efforts to guide young investors in their journey to become savvier investors in their own right. After all one of the best ways to learn about the stock market is to share in the experience and expertise of one of Singapore’s leading stock and futures broking firms and YIP is developed around this principle.

3: Who is eligible to apply for YIP?
 

The Young Investor Pack (YIP) has been designed specifically for fledgling investors who are:

 

  • New OCBC Securities customers studying at local tertiary institutions and polytechnics; and
  • Between 18 and 20 years old (Young Investors), and 21 and 29 years old.

4: Can I apply for YIP if I am an existing customer of OCBC Securities?
 

No, YIP account is for new applications only.

5: If I have opened a trading account with OCBC Securities, how do I update my new particulars with CDP and OCBC Securities?
 

You can update your new email or contact numbers directly via iOCBC online trading system . After you have successfully login, click on to "Account Mgmt" and select "My Particulars" and enter the details accordingly.

To update your personal particulars such as Address, *Name, *NRIC/Passport No., *Nationality and/or *PR Status, please download and complete the Updating Form.

After completion, kindly mail back the form to us, together with the supporting document certified true copy as mentioned below.

We are unable to accept fax or email request.

CDP will only effect your request after it has satisfied that:

a)       signature matches with CDP’s record;
b)       the update request form and the supporting documents are in proper order;
c)       *certified true copy of the supporting documents (by Advocates & Solictors/Notary Public/Singapore Embassy/Justice of Peace)  if update of particulars has been sent by post
d)       *The change of such particulars will also be updated in all your approved trading accounts that are linked to your CDP securities account.

Alternatively, you may logon to CDP Internet Access to update your Address and Contact details.

 ACCOUNT OPENING - Answers
1: How can I sign up for YIP?
 

You can sign up for YIP simply by heading down to our office at the address below:

Alternatively, you can download the forms and complete the Individual Trading Account Opening form and present it in person or by mail to the above address. In addition, if you do not have a Central Depository Direct Securities Account (CDP Account), you are required to complete form CDP 1.3   and approach our friendly Customer Service Officer to certify your application. You can also head down to your nearest OCBC Bank branch or directly to CDP for them to certify your application.

18 – 20 years old

Apart from the account opening forms, clients between 18 and 20 years old are required to complete and sign the following:

 

  • Suitability Assessment Questionnaire – You would be assessed on the suitability of opening a securities trading account.

 

  • Risk disclosure Statement – Explanation will be provided to you on the risks and uncertainties associated with investing or trading in securities. You have to acknowledge on the form that the explanation was carried out.

2: What documents to submit?
 

You will need to bring down the following documents with your Student/Matriculation Card or relevant supporting documents:

3: I am currently waiting for admission into my tertiary studies, how do I submit the Student / Matriculation Card?
 

You can submit the letter of offer or acceptance from the institute as supporting document.

4: How long will it take for my account to be opened?
 

Upon completion of account opening procedures, you will receive either a welcome letter upon successful account application or a rejection letter if your application has failed. You will be notified within 5 working days from submission of complete documents for account opening.

5: Can I open a Share Financing account instead of a cash trading account under YIP?
 

The online trading account under YIP is a cash trading account without Share Financing facilities. If you are interested in the Share Financing account, more details can be found here.

6: Can I request for a Trading Representative to assist me under YIP?

 YIP FEATURES - Answers
1: What is the difference between YIP members who are 18 to 20 years old and 21 years old and above?
 

Clients between the age of 18 – 20 years old is considered to be more vulnerable and we have to take additional steps to ensure that applicants are aware of their risks tolerance and also to ascertain that they have sufficient financial knowledge to engage in trading activities.

 

18 – 20 years old

21 – 29 years old

No trading in warrants, covered warrants

Able to trade in warrants, covered warrants

No opening of leveraging accounts like SBL, Margin or Extended Settlement Contract (ES) accounts.

Able to open leveraging accounts like SBL, Margin or Extended Settlement Contact (ES) accounts.

Required to complete the Risk Disclosure Form and Suitability Assessment Form

No such requirements

Deposit of at least $5000 is required to commence trading

2: What will happen if I trade in the forbidden instruments like warrants?
 

If any of these forbidden instruments like warrants is traded, OCBC Securities has the right to close off any or all of these positions; and OCBC Securities will not be liable for any losses suffered by the client as a result of the forced sale or purchase.

3: What is inside the Young Investor Pocketbook?
 

The Pocketbook is a beginner's guide to investing in shares. The content includes an introduction to stocks and shares, overview of how to trade shares, different investment instruments, technical and fundamental analysis.

4: How do I collect the investment book?
 

A redemption letter will be sent to you together with the welcome letter upon successful account opening.  The book can be collected at Times Bookshop located in Funan Centre or Centrepoint upon producing the redemption letter. Please bring along your NRIC for verification. Terms & Conditions apply.

5: What is the S$50 Commission Rebate about?
 

The commission rebate is applicable only for the first trade done within 6 months from the date of account commencement, up to a maximum of S$50. It will be credited into the Trust Account If the commission for the first trade is less than S$50, we will rebate the actual commission amount.Terms & Conditions apply.

6: How do I know if the rebate has been credited into my Trust Account?
 

You can refer to your month-end statement or your Trust Account details online via iOCBC to confirm if the payment is in. No letters will be sent to notify the account crediting.

7: What can I use the rebate for?
 

You can use the rebate to offset commissions incurred for your subsequent trades. Simply email to younginvestor@ocbcsec.com to indicate your instructions.
